What are probiotics for horses?

A healthy intestinal flora plays an important role in a horse’s digestive system. The caecum and large intestine contain many different microorganisms that play an important role in the digestion of fibre from the diet. Changes in feeding, environment or daily routine can influence the intestinal flora.

HorseFlex Probiotics is specially formulated to support the intestinal flora and healthy digestion. It contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and the live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 493.94 (Yea-Sacc®).

A healthy intestinal flora

A horse’s digestive process begins in the mouth, where feed is chewed and mixed with saliva before passing through the oesophagus to the stomach. Horses have relatively small stomachs and are naturally adapted to eating small amounts of food throughout the day. From the stomach, the feed passes into the small intestine and then into the caecum and large intestine.

In the caecum and large intestine, microorganisms play an important role in breaking down fibre from roughage. Feed passes relatively slowly through this part of the digestive tract, allowing nutrients to be utilised by the horse.

The microorganisms in the intestinal flora play an important role in the digestion of the diet. When changing feed, including roughage, it is therefore important to introduce the new feed gradually. This gives the intestinal flora time to adapt to the new diet.
